Overview
Déraciné is a 2018 VR adventure developed by FromSoftware in collaboration with Japan Studio and released exclusively on PlayStation 4 via PlayStation VR. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, you play as a fairy-like spirit—an unseen presence in a world where time stands still—able to manipulate life energy and time through a red ring (life) and a blue ring (time), engaging in puzzle-solving in an orphanage setting.

Storyline
You awaken as a faerie in a frozen-in-time boarding school, and are tasked with proving your existence to six orphan children and their headmaster. Using temporal and life-energy powers, you aim to influence events across different timelines—such as preventing a child’s leg injury, restoring life to a dead mouse, and enabling connections among the children.
As the story unfolds, it’s revealed that you’re actually a spectral manifestation of Alexis—created when Yuliya, driven by grief, used the wand of life energy to bring her back. Ultimately, you face a choice: restore Yuliya’s life at the cost of your own continued presence or retain your existence while accepting Yuliya’s passing. Your decision determines whether you fade into nothingness or continue as guardian.
Climax & Themes
The climax occurs when the faerie confronts the truth of its own identity and makes the ultimate sacrifice. Choosing to restore Yuliya’s life means relinquishing its ability to exist in the physical world—fading away as the orphanage children celebrate life and memory in her place.
Déraciné explores serenity, the nature of existence, and the emotional weight of sacrifice. Its storytelling is subtle and melancholic, inviting players to piece together a reflection on memory, regret, and purpose through environmental storytelling—enhanced by VR’s immersive, fragile atmosphere.
