Bloodborne
Overview
Bloodborne is a 2015 action-role-playing game by FromSoftware, published by Sony for the PlayStation 4. Players become a Hunter exploring the Gothic Victorian city of Yharnam, plagued by a transformative blood-borne disease that turns its inhabitants into horrific beasts. The fast-paced combat focuses on offensive strategies, using trick weapons, firearms for parrying, and the “Rally” system that allows regaining lost health through aggressive strikes. The gameplay emphasizes exploration, combat, and unveiling the city’s mysteries.
Bloodborne is widely regarded as one of the greatest games ever made, celebrated for its atmospheric world, sound design, Lovecraftian themes, and interconnected level design. It won numerous Game of the Year awards and has sold over 7 million units by 2022.

Storyline
The game takes place in Yharnam, a city ruled by the Healing Church, which uses sacred blood to heal ailments—but which also spreads a horrifying plague. The player, an outsider labelled a Hunter, begins a quest for “Paleblood,” exploring the city, battling beasts and cosmic horrors, and delving into the twisted ideals of the Church. Hunters use the Hunter’s Dream as a haven, guided by Gehrman and assisted by the Doll, while unraveling eldritch secrets.
As the Hunter delves deeper, they discover occult rituals and beings linked to cosmic entities, particularly involving the Red Moon and transformations tied to “Insight,” which reveal a horrifying underlying reality. The spreading of the beastly scourge reflects humanity’s descent into madness.
Climax & Themes
At its climax, the Hunter confronts revelations about Yharnam’s cyclical curse and the incomprehensible Great Ones. The deeper the Hunter’s Insight, the more the horrors of the world are revealed—blurring the lines between dream and reality. The choice to ascend beyond the hunt or remain bound within it forces reflection on the nature of the player’s quest.
Bloodborne explores themes of cosmic horror, madness, and the peril of seeking forbidden knowledge. It interweaves gothic horror and Lovecraftian philosophy, emphasizing aggression and survival in the face of overwhelming cosmic truths. As one critic noted, Miyazaki’s creation stands among the most effective tributes to Lovecraft’s work, where “the best defense is a good offense” and reality is never fully stable.
